Polish ladies manage very well
Polish women do very well in enterprise and are among the best educated in Europe. This data comes from a report by the European Commission. As experts explain, this is the result of endurance and responsibility, which are characteristic of Polish women, as well as the difficult job market, which forces women to earn a living. In a chart showing the entrepreneurship of women in the European Union, the French are the leaders, then, there are Poles, next, Italians, and then the Spanish, the Latvians, the British, and the Portuguese. The Irish were in last place.
Warsaw is the least expensive
The capital of Poland is the least expensive city in the European Union, and one of the least expensive ones in Europe. Among 73 European cities surveyed, Warsaw took 71st place. Only Kiev and Mińsk are cheaper, according to the latest ranking by ECA International about prices in particular cities around the world. Warsaw is a city for the thrifty – even life in Sarajevo, Bucharest or the Moldavian city of Kishinev is more expensive than it is in our capital. The top two places – the most expensive cities – are Oslo and Copenhagen, followed by four Swiss cities, Geneva, Zurich, Basel and Bern. In the entire world, the most expensive place is the capital of Angola, Luanda, and then Tokyo and Nagoya.
The attractiveness of Polish food products
The crisis has not hurt Polish food exports. In the first four months of this year, Poland sold food products abroad worth more than 3.5 billion euro, according to the newest data from the Ministry of Economy. Other areas of economy noted a drop in exports. Producers confirm the positive trend in the agricultural-food industry. Polish food competes in terms of its price as well as its quality, since our agricultural industry has been greatly modernized since Poland joined the European Union, in order to fulfill the EU standards.
20 billion zloty on roads
This year’s expenditures on road infrastructure in our country may exceed 20 billion zloty. The minister of infrastructure claimed that it is possible that more than this amount will be spent, and that it shows the speed at which investment is taking place. In 2008, we spent nearly 14 billion zloty on roads.
From Warsaw to Riga
Starting in mid-September, a new Latvian air carrier, Air Baltic, will fly from the Warsaw Frederic Chopin airport at Okęcie to the capital of Latvia, Riga. There will be daily connections from Monday to Sunday. The Polish carrier LOT also offers flights to Riga, nine times a week.
More and more hotels
The number of new hotels in Poland keeps growing. This year, as many as 140 new facilities will be built. That is more than 20 times more than in 2008. Euro 2012, which will be organized in Poland, has stimulated the hotel sector, in spite of the fact that the crisis is also discernible. This year, the value of hotel investments will reach around 3 billion zloty, and 140 new hotels will be opened. Though the crisis has affected the hotel industry in the world and in Poland, too, another 160 hotels are still planned. According to experts, there are two main reasons for the increased activity in the industry – the upcoming European football championships and the enormous deficit in accommodation.
The largest translation in 2009
The Swedish company Skanska sold the Warsaw Deloitte House for 117 million euro. It was acquired by the German investment fund Deka Immobilien. So far, it is this year’s largest transaction in the commercial real estate market in Poland. Until now, Deloitte House was part of the Atrium complex on Jana Pawła II Avenue, developed over the last dozen or so years by Skanska. It is a class A office building with an area of 21,000 square meters. The building was given over for use in June of this year. It is the first building in Poland that received the GreenBuilding certificate from the European Commission.
The Internet for children and the youth
More than 86 billion euro will be available to local governments for computer equipment and Internet connections, for children and the youth from poor homes, according to the department of community computing in the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration.
A billion euro for Poland
There will be a billion euro for Poland from the World Bank. The World Bank in Washington announced that the board of directors of the World Bank accepted the strategy for cooperation between the World Bank and the Polish government for the years 2009-2013, and the second payment of a loan for our country amounting to 1 billion euro.
We are using funds from the European Union
Polish companies are using funds from the European Union. Only one of the 111 large investments in infrastructure which received funding from the Cohesion Fund cannot be realized in time. By the end of June, Polish companies had received 4.8 billion euro. That is 70% of the amount which needs to be used by the end of 2010.
