ABOUT CULTURE
Polish Culture in London
Poland Street Underground Festival was advertised on such a poster. The Vinyl Factory gallery at Poland Street hosted the world premiere of the computer game The Witcher based on the fantasy novel by Andrzej Sapkowski. You could also see the film entitled Peter and a Wolf (Piotruś i wilk) directed by Suzy Templeton, produced in the film studio in Łódź, which is considered the best animation of the latest festival in Annecy. There were also concerts of The Poise Rite, Aleks and the Drummer duo, and the Polish - English band called The Firm. The festival was organized by the Institute of Polish Culture in London, which has been recently moved to a new seat at Poland Street in the center of Soho. The street was given its name in the 17th century, probably to celebrate the victory of Polish King Jan III Sobieski over the Turks in 1683. It is worth remembering that in the last two years several hundreds of thousands of Polish people, especially young people, have come and been living in the United Kingdom.
Katyń in Moscow
The latest film by the Oscar winner Andrzej Wajda telling the story of the murder on thousands of Polish officers by the Russians during the Second World War, was shown in the Polish Embassy in Moscow several months before its official premiere. The Russians know very little about this crime on the innocent, interned Poles, as this information was not revealed by the communist censorship. In the audience, there were outstanding representatives of Russian culture and people involved in human rights movement activities in the country. - I would like to ask all the Poles to forgive us. Not only communists are guilty hereÖ We allowed this terrible thing to happen in our country,î said Sergey Kovalyov, a former ombudsman, a candidate to the Russian Parliament.
Beauty of Paintings on Glass
The Ethnographical Museum (Muzeum Etnograficzne) in Warsaw invites to an exhibition of the works by one of the most excellent artists painting on glass. Her name is Jolanta Pęksa (born 1952), and she has been closely connected, since her early childhood, with Zakopane in the district of Podhale, where this type of art has had a very long tradition. Ewelina Pęksa, an excellent painter, is her mother-in-law and her tutor as far as painting on glass is concerned. Jolanta Pęksa consciously uses the rich folk tradition, to which she adds her own interpretations, iconographic motifs and new formal solutions. Her paintings impress with unconventional compositions and interesting, often humorous, presentation of themes. The artist has received numerous awards and she has already had 35 exhibitions in Poland and abroad. The exhibition in the Ethnographic Museum will be open until February 17, 2008.
Polish Hollywood
This is an image of the future film town to be built in Nowe Miasto on the Pilica River. This will be a modern Polish film production studio, Polish Hollywood you may say, the most modern and the largest film studio in Europe. It will occupy the area of 680 hectares, and will have modern infrastructure. It is expected that it will compete with other film production studios in the world. Within the area of the studio, there will be ten production halls, the largest of which is to have the surface of 12,000 square meters. Another advantage of the place where the studio is to be located is its natural beauty and spaciousness. At the same time, such a film town is an attraction for tourists and an excellent base for educational activities. The studio will be constructed in stages, and the whole of it will be ready in 2011.
Polish Painting in Dublin
The exhibition of the most famous works of Polish painting in the National Gallery in Dublin is bound to be a success. In the streets of Dublin, there are buses with posters advertising the exhibition. They show a reproduction of Tamara de Lempicka's painting entitled Lassitude (our photo). This picture was painted in 1927, before the artist's dazzling career in Paris and in the United States started and her works became Art Deco icons. The exhibition presents 74 paintings from the best period in Polish art, from the collection of the National Museum (Muzeum Narodowe) in Warsaw and from other Polish museums. The paintings are full of references to symbolism, cubism, expressionism and surrealism in art. The exhibition shows the artwork of such outstanding Polish painters as, for example, Jan Matejko, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Chełmoński, Józef Mehoffer and Zbigniew Pronaszko. The Irish mass media are impressed by the exhibition, which makes Polish people living in Dublin very proud. The exhibition will be open until January 27, 2008.
Culture Instead of Vodka
Koneser (in English: connoisseur) is the name of the former Warsaw Vodka Manufacturer (Warszawska Wytwórnia Wódek). Its beautiful historic building, dated 1897, is located in the district of Praga, which used to be squalid and dangerous, and only recently has become popular with artists. Soon, the building, thanks to intense efforts of Warsaw artists, is to be the home of a center of culture. Koneser is now private property, but the city, its former owner, still owns 10% of the most attractive objects, including the beautiful building in which the Luksfera Gallery has been operating for a few years. The authorities of the city would like to open a stage there, while in another building exhibition halls are to be established. The rest of Koneser is to host luxury apartments, a hotel, offices and restaurants.
