A Sputnik over Warsaw (Sputnik nad Warszawą) is the title of the film festival dedicated to Russian cinematography, to be organized in Warsaw from November 9 to November 18. You will be able to see 62 films that show a real panorama of old and contemporary Russian cinema, covering the years 1913 ñ 2007, that is from the times of silent cinema to the present. The festival is a perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the most important issues of contemporary Russian cinema, with the topics it touches upon, and the sensitivity it represents. It is also a chance to look at all these things we already know from the past and which have gained a stable position in the worldís culture. The festival will present the most outstanding Russian artists, such as Eisenstein, Bondarchuk, Tarkovsky and Mikhalkov, to name just a few. The Russian Film Festival is to become a permanent event, contributing to cultural cooperation between Poland and Russia.
Warsaw and Berlin on Transport
Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, paid another visit to Warsaw. He was received by Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Mayor of the city. The Polish party was interested, among other things, in transport solutions applied in Berlin, which could be used in Warsaw as a model to extend its transport routes. At first, the authorities of Warsaw would like to take advantage of the Germansí assistance in creating a common agglomeration ticket for the railway and public city transport, and to develop cycling and river transportation. Berlin can be proud of one of the best transport systems in the world, and ours here in Warsaw has been continuously extended. Nowadays, thanks to the funds from the European Union, there are chances to modernize and extend it further.
Polish Popeís Dramas
Wojtyła: Adaptations. Drama of Words and Gestures (Wojtyła: Inscenizacje. Dramat słowa i gestu) - this is the title of the exhibition presented in the Grand Theater (Teatr Wielki). It shows the Polish Pope, John Paul II (Karol Wojtyła) as a playwright. The exhibition presents original posters advertising plays, as well as some reconstructions of stage designs of some performances, e. g. of the adaptation of the drama entitled Our Godís Brother (Brat naszego Boga), known also from its film adaptation featuring Burt Lancaster. When visiting the exhibition, you can listen to recitations of Karol Wojtyła ís works by Polish actors, such as, for instance, Daniel Olbrychski. The exhibition will be open until November 11.
BBC World Invites to Warsaw
A spot advertising Warsaw has been broadcast on BBC World for two months. It lasts 30 seconds and will be broadcast 280 times. The campaign that advertises Warsaw is financed by Warsaw Destination Alliance, a foundation that gathers some 90 companies. The foundation has been promoting Warsaw abroad for five years. What makes the city attractive to foreigners who are the addressees of the commercial on BBC World? These are, in the first place, opportunities to organize international conferences. And participants in conferences, as we all know, do not spend their time in conference rooms only. In their free time, they do sightseeing, they do shopping, or go to restaurants. And this is the offer Warsaw presents them in this spot. An average foreign tourist spends some USD 42 a day, while a participant in an international conference, according to the estimates made by experts, spends USD 200 a day on average. In 2005, there were 2.3 million tourists who visited Warsaw. Last year, this number reached 2.7 million.

Fado in Sala Kongresowa
Her pseudonym is Misia, she is Portuguese, she was born in Porto to a family of dancers and musicians, and she is one of the greatest stars as far as Portuguese fado music is concerned. She will perform in Warsaw in the Congress Hall (Sala Kongresowa) in the Palace of Culture and Science on November 20, at 8 p. m. Where does this Polish-style pseudonym come from? Of course from the famous Polish woman, Misia Godebska. The artist explains it with these words: I enjoy reading books about the artistic life of the bohemia of the 1920s and 1930s. One of them was beautiful femme fatale of Polish origins, Misia Godebska. I have chosen her name as my pseudonym not because of her character or experiences, but because it is short and exotic. The real name of Misia is Suzana Maria, and her fado songs take the listener to the world of love, joy, laughter and sadness, as they are all necessary elements of fado. What about Misia Godebska? She was a famous beauty of Paris, she had a well-known salon and she was a friend of Coco Chanel, Proust, Nijinsky, Diaghilev, Renoir and other great artists from the first decades of the 20th century.
Basements of the Old Town to Open
The decision has been taken: medieval basements under the tenement houses in the Old Town will be opened to tourists. During the Second World War, the Germans destroyed the buildings in the Old Town and only the basements survived. They are deep, vast and gothic. The renovation plan has already been developed. The financing of the project will be supported by Norwegians, who are active in the field of restoring monuments to their former beauty. The restored basements will be the home of the rooms of the Historic Museum (Muzeum Historyczne), and of the center of youth culture. The project will be completed in 2011.
Two Artistic Events
Art lovers will be pleased to see two great exhibitions at top artistic level. The first will be presented in the National Museum (Muzeum Narodowe), where you will be able to admire some works by the most outstanding representatives of Flemish painting, such as, Rubens and van Dyck. The Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski), in turn, invites to the exhibition entitled From Luther to Bauhaus. Art and Treasures of Culture from German Museums (Od Lutra po Bauhaus. Sztuka i skarby kultury z muzeów niemieckich). It will present works of art and treasures of German and European culture from the last five hundred years, such as, for example, paintings by Munch, Richter, Canaletto, manuscripts by Goethe, and scores by Handel. For the first time, Poland hosts an exhibition that presents such a variety of masterpieces of German culture. And The Golden Age of Flemish Painting (Zloty wiek malarstwa flamandzkiego) in the National Museum is the largest exhibition of this kind in Poland after the Second World War. These are the two great artistic events. A must-see!
New Decalogue
A cycle of ten short fifteen-minute films is to be created under the patronage of, for instance, Maria Kieślowska, the wife of late Krzysztof Kieślowski (our photo), the excellent Polish film director. This will be a production of the young cinema addressed to young people. The idea is to make a new Decalogue twenty years after Kieślowski did his, in a different Poland, with a new generation. The logo of the project presents a boy on a skateboard correcting the d.k. log89 motto in the language of the Internet and short message service. The project was created by Andrzej Maćkowski from Gdynia, the author of numerous documentaries. He himself has recently received the Prix Italia award for the film entitled Music Lesson (Lekcja muzyki).
A Chance for Young Musicians
The Ministry of Culture has established a new Polish cultural institution ñ the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra. This is an answer to the need to give graduates of musical academies new opportunities to take up their professional activity in Poland, so that they are not forced to leave the country in search for work. The main aim of the Orchestra is to allow the most talented young musicians to make a debut, and to promote Polish culture. The Orchestra is to consist of artists who graduate from musical academies. For five years, they will be playing with the Orchestra, conducted by the most outstanding instructors and conductors. Sinfonia Iuventus will be promoting Polish and international musical heritage, and popularizing the musical culture in Poland and abroad.
