A record on the stage of the Roma
A record has been set at the Roma Music Theater – the musical „Phantom of the Opera” has been shown more than 300 times within 13 months. It is performed every day, and twice on Saturdays. Every time, the audience fills the huge, thousand-seat Roma Theater. No other theater in Warsaw has achieved such spectacular frequency before. Of course, someone might say that a musical hit that was so well liked on the West End or on Broadway is easy to promote. However, it is, in fact, the effect of hard word on the part of the directors of the Roma and the entire group. The Roma Music Theater has also released an album with the Warsaw version of „Phantom of the Opera”, which recently reached double platinum status.
A coin with Chopin
Warsaw will have a special-issue coin: a denar with an image of Frederic Chopin. These limited edition coins will have monetary value. The first issue is planned for 2010, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the great Polish composer’s birth, and the Year of Chopin. There will be a picture of the composer and the Warsaw coat of arms with a mermaid on it. Money from sales of the coins is supposed to go to social causes, like building playing fields for children and youth. It is worth mentioning that other cities in Poland also have their own denarius coins, for example Zakopane, or Gdańsk (with Lech Wałęsa).
A Warsaw restaurant in Michelin
The latest edition of the Michelin Red Guide, „Main Cities of Europe 2009,” which describes the best hotels and restaurants in Europe, was released in Paris. 32 Polish restaurants found their way into it – 16 from Cracow and 16 from Warsaw (among them is the Warsaw restaurant Absynt). The Michelin Red Guide is something like a bible for cooks, connoisseurs of the best foods, and tourists. The symbol referring to the quality of the restaurant is a crossed fork and knife (from one to five), and, regarding hotels, a pictogram of a little building. The first Michelin Red Guide appeared in 1900, and it was given out for free until 1920. The first Michelin guide in Polish was published in 2006.
The charm of sport in old postcards
The Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw, which is located in a beautiful, contemporary building on the Vistula River, has prepared an interesting and charming display of old-fashioned sport-themed postcards on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. „O sporcie, tyś jest radością” (Oh sport, you are a joy) has a lightness that is associated with the character of the postcards themselves, as well as the content they portray. Sports are shown in the cards from their nicest side, more often showing pleasure than the effort and difficulty that lies at the heart of hard physical exertion. It is a pretext to draw attention to the beauty of the human body, encouragement to improve its fitness through activity, in competition, as well as in nice – frequently male-female – company. That is where the lovely female figures come in, or couples, which are shown as if to suggest that doing sports promises more than one thing. Humorous and satirical accents, which are not uncommon in sport postcards, emphasize that sports are an opportunity for fun, laughter, and joy, but also a source of pride from the victories, as many cards portaying famous athletes show, which documented competitions, gymnastics shows, and other events. At the exhibition 300 postcards from 1897-1940 are presented.
Warsaw a cultural capital of Europe?
The European Cultural Capital is the most important initiative aimed at cities that are engaged in cultural development. Warsaw, as a city of culture, rich history, and constant transformation aspires to gain the title of European Cultural Capital in 2016. Obtaining this title would allow Warsaw to become a metropolis of central significance in the area of culture, and also for greater participation of the citizens of our city in cultural life. The first city to get this title was Athens, the capital of Greece, in 1985. The judging about which Polish city will get the title of European Cultural Capital will take place in 2011 – in two years. Still, there is already a campaign to promote the culture of Warsaw in Europe. The entire campaign is coordinated by a famous organizer and manager of cultural events, Ewa Czeszejko-Sochacka.
An invitation to the Capitol Theater
At the Capitol Theater, there is yet another premiere: „Lady Fosse”. The title role of Fosse, filled with charm and inborn elegance, sometimes humorous, sometimes predatory, and sometimes romantic, expresses the essence of female nature in dance. Hidden desires and the hidden faces of the main heroine are revealed in the dance performance, creating wonderful, collective chorographical arrangements, shows of dancing competitions done by excellent, professional dancers. It is sensational that for the first time we have the opportunity to see all on one stage many dancers who are known from popular television programs like „Dancing with the stars,” „Star Ranking,” and „Eurovision Dance,” as well as participants of dance competitions, many of whom have achieved top honors and great applause of audiences. For the first time, Polish masters and finalists of world competitions, who until now competed against each other in television programs and competitions, will be seen together. You will also see a unique anthology of dance, starting from the title Fosse from the 1920s to contemporary times. Jazz, Charleston, rumba, rock & roll, jive, and modern jazz are only a few of the techniques and styles that will fill this special show.
A rich offering of art
An avalanche of wonderful concerts is in store for Warsaw in May and June. At Torwar, there will be a performance by „Simply Red”, who is ending its artistic activity after 25 years of appearances around the world, but before it does that it is taking a farewell tour to many countries, visiting Warsaw, among other places. Just as „Simply Red” leaves Warsaw, „Depeche Mode” will arrive for their fourth appearance in the capital – they are one of the most significant music bands in the world, who successfully fuse electronic music with rock, or even blues and gospel. The artists will perform at the Gwardia Studium. Lauryn Hill will perform at the Congressional Hall; she gained world fame in the group „The Fugees”, which had hits like „Killing Me Softly” and „Ready or Not”. The singer will be in Poland for the second time.
