Concerts at the Chopin monument
Like every year, from the 24th of May to the end of September, concerts will take place every Sunday from 12: 00-16: 00 at Łazienki Park, at the Frederic Chopin monument. The most eminent pianists from the older and younger generations take part in these performances. The atmosphere at these concerts is exceptional because of their setting. The romantic monument to the Polish composer, gazing at the pond, the greenery of the royal Łazienki Park, flowerbeds and the colorful peacocks that often accompany the music are all unique aesthetic experiences. It is worth going!
An invitation to a„Happening with a Garland”
On the 20th of June, on the day of the spring/summer solstice, Stołeczna Estrada, just like every year, invites the residents of the capital to the largest fun, family-style party in Warsaw – the traditional „Wianki” (Garlands), a tradition that dates back to pre-Christian times. Wianki nad Wisłą (Garland on the Vistula) in the capital tries to connect tradition and modernity by referring to ancient midsummer rites devoted to the elements of fire and water (which had cleansing powers, according to ancient beliefs), presenting them in the form of modern happenings. Releasing garlands has become an event almost like beating Guinness world records, and sparks of fire have become a breathtaking show of fireworks by the best Polish and foreign pyrotechnics groups. The picnic is very popular among Varsovians. Every year, tens of thousands of people come to it. It is a great occasion to spend a weekend with friends and family in a picturesque place on the Vistula. The huge picnic will take place, as always, at Podzamcze, starting at 13: 00 and lasting until midnight. In the early afternoon, there is no shortage of attractions and cultural events. There will be craft fairs, concerts, shows, and culinary offerings, as well as the „Happing with a Garland.” The crowning event of the nighttime festivities will be, as usual, a gigantic pyrotechnic show. This year, we are also planning a surprise for spectators! The show will certainly enchant Warsaw residents and give them many unforgettable impressions. Entry is free!
Occupied Warsaw in the eyes of Germans
An exhibition of photographs by German journalists in occupied Warsaw has been opened in Berlin. The show, called „In the lens of the enemy,” presents Poland’s capital through the eyes of photographers from the Propaganda units of the SS and Wehrmacht. Shown in Warsaw last fall, the show contains chronologically arranged photos from the entire period of the Second World War – from the capture of Warsaw by the Nazis in 1939 to the Warsaw Uprising and the destruction of our capital by the Germans. The photos come from the archives of the Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin and the Federal Archives in Koblenz. Bogdan Borusewicz, Marshall of the Senate, stated when he took part in the opening of the exhibition that passing on the historical truth helps Polish-German unity. The collection of photographs, though created for purposes of fascist propaganda, show the true picture of Nazi crime. „It is both terrifying and instructive” claimed Borusewicz. The vice-chancellor of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Thierse, emphasized that Germans are aware of the responsibility that has resulted from history. „History cannot be rescinded, but it cannot be incorrectly interpreted or rewritten, either” said Thierse.
Virtually around Warsaw
Warsaw is the first city in Poland that will be precisely photographed – meter by meter, street by street – and put on the Internet. Virtual Warsaw will appear on the Internet at the end of this year. The next in line is Cracow. It will be possible to move around in Warsaw virtually thanks to the function of Google-Street View, which is yet another initiative by Google, after Google Maps and Google Earth, which intends to bring the real world to virtual space. Until very recently, we dreamed of being able to see our area and the outline of the house we live in on Google Earth. Street View goes further – it brings us to the very door of the building we want to look at. The opportunity to look at streets is available in many cities in the United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, and Holland. Aside from Warsaw, other places are also being filmed, such as cities in Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Greece, and Hungary. In the photo: one of the cars with a camera on the roof, which will photograph Warsaw for a few months.
An icon of Polish architecture
There is a chance that the Copernicus Science Centre will receive the EU funding and that it will be ready next year. The construction site can be seen live on the Internet at www.kopernik.org.pl. The centre is being built between the electrical plant in Powiœle and the Warsaw University Library (BUW). It is the first site of its kind to be built in Poland. Specialists have already hailed it an icon of contemporary Polish architecture. The elevation of „Copernicus” will be covered in concrete slabs and glass in an earthy brown color. The roof will resemble a landscape of Mars. Visitors will be able to wander among craters and volcanic cones. Inside, there will be laboratories, workshops, and permanent exhibitions: the world in motion, man and the environment, the roots of civilization, the light zone, and galleries for children and youth. There will be a planetarium over „Copernicus” which will light up at night with colorful lights. There will be an outdoor Discovery Park growing around the building Visitors will be able to carry out their own experiments. „Copernicus” is supposed to be ready in 2010. The investment will cost 337.5 million zloty.
