Krasiczyn - Pearl of the Renaissance

Krasiczyn - Pearl of the Renaissance The castle in Krasiczyn, located at a distance of 12 km from Przemyśl in the Podkarpackie voivodeship, is one of the most beautiful examples of historic Renaissance- Mannerism architecture in Poland. The building, erected on the plan of a rectangle - with an enormous courtyard encircled by arcades - is defended by four imposing bastions: Divine, Papal, Royal and Nobleman's. The century old castle is surrounded by a picturesque park with a large pond. This is a wonderful place to rest.
Visiting guests can count on delicious, luxurious hotel rooms and many surprises.
Located on the route from Przemyśl to Sanok on a bend of the San River, the Krasiczyn Castle is called a pearl of the Renaissance. Its construction was begun in 1592 by Stanisław Krasicki, a descendant of a Mazovian noble family (Rogala Coat of Arms) that had come here at the end of the 15th century. The building, in spite of numerous fires and wars, has preserved its silhouette almost unchanged. The dominating four bastions were to symbolise the social order at that time. The large rectangular courtyard is surrounded from the north and east with habitable wings and from the south and west by curtain walls, topped with a beautiful attic.
In the middle of the western wing, behind a richly decorated entrance gate a square clock tower was built. It was exactly through this gate that, first by a drawbridge and later by a stone bridge, the way led from the castle to a town that existed at that time. One of the most valuable architectonic elements of this building is the chapel, located in the Divine bastion, which is almost the equal of the Zygmunt chapel in Wawel Castle in Cracow.
In the courtyard special attention is merited by the sculptured portals, loggias and arcades. Also interesting are the unique wall decorations, the so-called sgraffito, made by a method of superimposing thin layers of coloured plaster. Testifying to the importance and splendour of the castle is the fact that, in the past, many Polish kings were guests here, among them Zygmunt III Vasa, Władysław IV, Jan Kazimierz and August II.
After the death of the Krasicki family, the building and the entire land property were successively inherited by the Modrzewskis, the Wojakowskis, the Tarłowskis, the Potockis and the Ponińskis. Prince Leon Sapieha bought the property from the last family. From the moment when the castle came under state ownership after the end of the Second World War, it gradually fell into ruin. In recent years this historic complex has belonged to the Industrial Development Agency S. A. in Warsaw. Without a doubt this agency is one of the best protectors of this castle has had in past years.
