The National Philharmonic (Filharmonia Narodowa) is celebrating the 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin’s birthday with a cycle of numerous concerts performed by both Polish and foreign artists.
On the 4th of February, the concert entitled W hołdzie Chopinowi (A Tribute to Chopin) performed by Mariya Kim. On the 5th and on the 6th of February, Bo Chopin upiększał, uszlachetniał wszystko (As Chopin Beautified, Ennobled Everything). On the 7th of February, the concert for children Warszawa młodości Chopina (Warsaw of Chopin’s Youth). On the 12th and on the 13th of February, a Valentine concert composed of works by Mozart, Dvorak and Donizetti. On the 18th of February, a jazz version of Chopin’s music, while on the 22nd of February, on the day of Chopin’s birthday, his concert in F minor, opus 21 performed by Rafał Blechacz, the laureate of the latest International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition. And on the 27th of February, two symphony concerts by Chopin performed by Evgeny Kissin and Garrick Ohlsson.
The Grand Theater (Teatr Wielki) invites to the Polish popular opera (with an excellent mazurka), namely Straszny dwór (The Haunted Manor) by Stanisław Moniuszko on the 3rd and on the 5th of February. The Romeo and Juliet ballet by Sergei Prokofiev will be staged on the 6th and on the 7th of February. On the 21st of February, you can listen to a concert by young and talented Polish musicians from the „Sinfonia Iuventus” group. And on the 25th of February, the premiere of the well-known and popular opera by Giuseppe Verdi, La traviata. The next performances of the opera are scheduled for the 26th and the 27th of February.
Since March 2008 the „Roma” Musical Theater has been constantly staging The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The very popular musical is considered a great success of the theater.
The Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski) in Warsaw invites to the exhibition entitled Uroda portretu (The Beauty of the Portrait), namely the history of the Polish portrait painting from the 16th century to the 1920s. Some of the exhibited works have been showed for the first time in public. These are portraits from 30 museums, Polish and foreign alike. They were painted by such artists as Marcin Kober, Daniel Schultz, Marceli Bacciarelli, Antoni Rodakowski and Stanisław Wyspiański.
In Warsaw music clubs you can expect high temperatures, although February is a very cold month of the year.
In Stodoła, on the 5th of February, a concert by Scottish band Biffy Clyro promoting their latest album entitled „Only Revolutions”. On the 7th of February, also in Stodoła, a performance by India-rock star, White Lies.
Famous Chris Rea, the author of such hits as, for instance, Josephine, is to give a big concert on the 16th of February in Torwar.
Also on the 16th, Valery Gergiev from the London Symphony Orchestra will perform Le Sacre du Printemps by Igor Stravinsky and concert in E minor by Frederic Chopin.
On the same day, in Palladium, a performance by British musician Ian Brown. While on the 19th of February, in the Central Artistic Pool (Centralny Basen Artystyczny), a concert by Nosfell whose music is based on folk, blues and rock. In Palladium, on the 20th of February, a performance by Tony Allen.
On the 26th of February, a big event in the world of cinema – the Warsaw premiere of the latest film by famous Polish director Roman Polański entitled Ghost, based on the popular novel The Ghost Writer. The artist was finishing the film under house arrest.
