WHERE TO GO - 01.2008
The National Philharmonic (Filharmonia Narodowa, www.filharmonia.pl) invites to, among other things, the concert of music by E. Elgar, L. Różycki and A. Russel conducted by Jonathan Darlington on January 5 and 6. On January 23, you can listen to a concert of old music entitled Hesperion XXI, presenting the works by, for instance, Diego Ortiz, Alonso Mudarra and Gaspar Sanz. On January 21, there is the Great Strauss Gala in Poland, featuring Strauss Festival Orchestra, which will be performing the compositions of the famous Strauss family. On January 27, a guest performance by St. Paul Chamber Orchestra conducted by Roberto Abbado, with Lars Vogt playing the piano. The repertoire of the concert includes works by G. Ligeti, L. van Beethoven and A. Schonberg.
The Grand Theater (Teatr Wielki, www.teatrwielki.pl) invites to its rich opera repertoire: Madame Butterfly - on January 6 and 8, Romeo and Juliet - on January 9 and 20, The Nutcracker - on January 5, 10, 15 and 26, La Fille Mal Garde - on January 12 and 29, Nabucco - on January 13, and Don Giovanni - on January 17 and 19. And a guest performance of the Cracovia Danza group presenting Queen Bonas Masquerade - January 19 (small stage), Onegin - January 23 and Carmen - January 25 and 27. On January 28, Evening with Robert Wilson, a great theater creator who is realizing Gounods Faustus in the Warsaw Opera. On January 30, L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi - a performance by La Fenice instrumental group from France and Choeur de Chambre de Namure from Belgium. This is a concert performance on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the premiere of the work in Mantua. On January 31, a fantastic concert (Krzysztof Penderecki's Symphony No. 8 Lieder der Vergnglichkeit) in the beautiful building of the Basilica of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is a replica of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.
The Roma Musical Theater (Teatr Muzyczny Roma, www.teatrroma.pl) in January invites to a family musical entitled Mr. Blot's Academy (Akademia pana Kleksa), which has been very popular and has been attracting crowds of people, not only children, for a few years.
The National Museum (Muzeum Narodowe, www.mnw.art.pl) until January 27 invites to the exhibition of Polish painting entitled From Symbolism to Modern Art 1880-1939 (Od symbolizmu do sztuki nowoczesnej 1880-1939).
Until January 13, you can also see the excellent exhibition entitled From Luther to Bauhaus (Od Lutra po Bauhaus) in the Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski, www.zamek-krolewski.com.pl). The exhibition presents the art and treasures of German museums: paintings, sculptures, drawings, works of literature and music, and handicraft. These are the artworks by such eminent authors as, for instance, Cranach, Durer, Bellotto, van Dyck, Munch, Goethe and Klee.
The Zachęta Gallery (www. zacheta. art. pl) presents an exhibition that has proved to be very popular. This should be attributed to the author of the works presented, namely Wilhelm Sasnal, one of the most talented Polish artists who have been having an international career. The exhibition presents his latest paintings and films. His paintings are based on random photographs, family pictures, films, the Internet, cartoons and books. The world has been already impressed by Sasnalęs artwork. And you have an opportunity to experience it, too, thanks to the exhibition in the Zachęta Gallery.
And finally, an invitation to a very unique place, namely to the Sugarcane Factory (Fabryka Trzciny, www.fabrykatrzciny.pl), located in the district of Praga in the old factory which has been transformed into a dynamically developing culture center. In January, the center invites to the performance entitled Elling, based on the script by Axel Hellstenius, telling the story of a unique friendship of two patients from a psychiatric institution (on January 5, 6, 12, 13, 25 and 26). On January 20, a concert of Clara Hill, and on January 8, 28 and 29 - City Mania (Miasto mania), an excellent concert of Maria Peszek. The Sugarcane Factory is a place where you can not only have good time and cultural entertainment, but eat a good meal in its restaurant as well.
