WHERE TO GO - 04.2008

The National Philharmonic in Warsaw returns after a long artistic tour in Ireland and Great Britain, where it performed the works by Dvorzak, Beethoven, Tschiakovsky, Szostakiewicz, Lutosławski and Penderecki. In April, the Philharmonic invites Varsovians to recitals of the masters: on the 8th of April, Vladimir Spivakow (violin) and Aleksander Ghindin (piano) will play the works by Bartok, Beethoven, and Stravinsky. On the 11th and 12th, something amazing! - a recital by Ewa Podleú, whose contra-alto voice, with its beautiful tone and great strength, has brought together music fans from around the world. The artist will sing pieces by Rossini (an overture to the opera 'Semiramida', and a cantata 'Joan díArc') and Prokofiev (the cantata 'Aleksander Newski'). On the 7th of April, there will be another 'Recital of Masters' - Alfred Brendel will play works by Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert on piano.

The Grand Theater extends an invitation for the 5th and 9th of April, to Donizettiís opera 'Lucia di Lammermoor', the premiere of which takes place on the 30th of March. Another premiere will also take place - the wonderful Polish ballet 'Pan Twardowski' by Ludomir Różycki (on the 27th and the 29th of April). In addition, the Warsaw opera stage also offers Rossiniís 'The Barber of Seville' and 'Zabawa tancerska' by Kurpiński (on the 10th and 20th), 'Haunted Mansion,- the wonderful opera by Polish composer Stanisław Moniuszko (on the 11th of April), 'Swan Lake' by Tschiakovsky (on the 12th of April), 'Wozzeck' by Berg (on the 13th), and a concert by the Israeli Philharmonic on the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

The Roma Music Theater offers an entirely different repertoire, and invites you to the excellent musical, 'Phantom of the Opera' by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which is on throughout April. Andrew Lloyd Weberís famous 'Phantom' is, as music critics have written around the world, 'true pleasure, which the musical theater can give its audience.' It is the greatest musical of all times. Need one say more?

And there is also Syrena Theater, which invites you on the 5th and 6th of April to the famous 'Threepenny Opera' by Brecht and Weil, and the very funny musical 'żołnierz królowej Madagaskaru' by Polish authors Julian Tuwim and Tadeusz Sygietyński. It is understandable even to those who do not speak a word of Polish!

From the 15th of April to the 29th of June, the National Museum presents a unique exhibit, 'Ukraine to the world.' It will be the first presentation of wonderful ancient relics from this country to take place outside of Ukraine. These works come from private collections. There are as many as 400 works, and they are truly fantastic - they date from the period from the 6th century BC to the 12th century AD. They are works by Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarmats, Greeks, Roman, Byzantines, and Kievan Rusí. It shows the rich history of Polandís eastern neighbor. As well, from the 22nd of April to the 29th of June, there is a lovely, colorful exhibit called 'Vestigia delle Terme', meaning the Gold House of Neron, the legendary palace of the cruel emperor, and one of the most famous buildings of ancient times, recreated on large canvases by the Polish painter Franciszek Smuglewicz (1745-1807). This exhibition is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the artistís death; he was one of the most important neoclassicists in Poland. The Warsaw exhibit is part of the European research project 'Vinzenzo Brenna and the transmission of the Classical'.

Another exhibit will take place at Galeria Zach ta, where, starting on the 4th of May, there will be a unique exhibit with the humorous title 'This is not an exhibit.' It is a very interestingly thought-out presentation showing the principles of caring for works of art. This exhibit is considered to be a process, and works are hung up in front of the public, and will be changed during the time the exhibit is on. Interesting!

And finally, an invitation to visit the botanical gardens in Powsin, just outside of Warsaw. It is an invitation to greet spring and relax being surrounded by nature. The colors and scents of spring are unrepeatable - arenít they?
