WHERE TO GO - 04.2009

Until the 10th of April at the National Philharmonic and the Grand Theater, numerous concerts will take place as part of the 13th annual Easter Ludwig van Beethoven Festival; so far, there has been no shortage of music lovers from abroad, from countries like France, Germany, Spain, the United States, and Japan. More information about this prestigious artistic event and its program can be found at www.beethoven.org.pl
The Grand Theater invites you on the 26th of April for the premiere of the opera „Lucrezia Borgia” by Gaetano Donizetti, with a libretto based on a text by Victor Hugo, under the direction of Michał Znaniecki and Will Crutchfield. The Polish pre-premiere of this opera also took place at the Grand Theater, but that was in 1843. The next performances will take place on the 28th and the 30th of April. As well, in the repertoire of the largest opera stage in Poland, there is (among other operas) „Madame Butterfly” (on the 9th and the 14th).
At the Roma Theater, whose specialty is a repertoire of musicals, „The Phantom of the Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Webber has been presented continually for more than a year. This musical, which has been referred to as the greatest musical of all time, and the most popular one in the world, is the greatest production challenge for the Roma Theater. It needs no advertisement but we would like to note that it is a sensation in the repertoire of Warsaw’s theaters.
At the National Museum there is an exhibit of French art from the 18th century that deserves particular attention. The exhibit is called „Le siecle francais. French paintings and drawings from the 18th century from the collections of Polish museums.” Works by French masters come from museums in Cracow, Wrocław, Poznań, and of course in Warsaw. The richness and variety of French art can be viewed in 70 oil paintings and in one hundred prints, watercolors, and pastels. Very interesting artistic impressions!
At the Zachęta Gallery until the 26th of April, there will be an display called „Interactive Playground” – you will be able to touch the „exhibits,” which act on the senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell. We advise you to try it.
At the Center for the Contemporary Arts, which is located in the historic Ujazdowski Castle, art from Turkey will be presented in April at an exhibit called „Divercity”. It is about current Turkish art shown from the perspective of Istanbul, a city which is located at the junction of eastern and western culture. It is an interesting exhibition in the context of the discussion about the „European-ness” of Turkey and its chances of joining the European Union.
It is also worth going to the Technical Museum for an exhibit called „Nicholas Copernicus and his history,” before the construction of the Nicholas Copernicus Science Center is completed on the bank of the Vistula, which is going to be an international attraction for Warsaw in two years” time.
On the 1st of April, the Royal Castle will open the former royal stables, called the Kubicki Arcades. They are located on the side facing the Vistula River, and date from the times when the river ran just beneath the castle walls. There will be interesting exhibitions in the arcades, such as the multimedia exhibit „Caravaggio today. An impossible exhibit”. In addition, the architecture of the arcades is attractive and worth visiting.
At the Congress Hall (Sala Kongresowa), which many artists consider to be the prettiest concert hall in Europe, the wonderful Cuban group „Pasion de Beuna Vista” will perform on the 21st of April, and on the 26th of April, the excellent French singer Patricia Kaas will give a concert.
And, in the end, an invitation to the Botanical Garden in Powsin. If you want to spend some time and relax in a spring time, April paradise, you just need to be there. Really!
