WHERE TO GO - 05.2008

In May (on the 6th), the National Philharmonic invites you for a wonderful concert, which has been organized in cooperation with the French Embassy in Poland. It is Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble with a program of works by Gluck, Hayden and Rameau. On the 9th and 10th, there is a concert by the Philharmonic under the direction of Pedro Halffter, with soloist Eldar Nebol (piano), with a program that includes de Falla, Saint-Saens and Shostakovich. On the 15th, the Chopin Soloist concert will take place, with excellent Polish pianist Marek Drewnowski, who will perform both of Chopin’s concertos - in E-minor and F-minor. A rare occasion! On the 16th of May, there will be a wonderful oratory concert, Beethoven’s ‘Missa Solemnis’. The Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic will be led by the world famous Polish conductor Stanisław Skrowaczewski. On the 31st of May, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande will make a guest appearance in Warsaw, and will play a repertoire of works by Bartok and Bruckner.

The Grand Theater has hits of the opera and ballet in its May repertoire, such as ‘Carmen’ by Bizet (on the 4th and 6th of May), ‘Wilhelm Tell’ by Rossini (on the 9th and 11th, concert version), ‘Aida’ by Verdi (on the 16th and 18th), ‘Lucia Di Lamermoor’ by Donizetti (on the 20th), ‘Pan Twardowski’ by Różycki (on the 24th), ‘Swan Lake’ by Tchaikovsky (on the 25th), ‘Sleeping Beauty’ by Tchaikovsky (on the 29th, 30th and the 31st of May), and also a guest appearance by the wonderful folkloric dance ensemble ‘Mazowsze’ on the 26th of May.

The Warsaw Chamber Opera (WOK) presents Rossini’s opera ‘Tancredi’ on the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th of May. On the 16th of May, at the Seminary Church, a ceremonial concert on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Chamber Choir of WOK will take place, which in subsequent days in May will get ready for the 18th Mozart Festival, an annual event which is already well known among European music lovers, and during which nearly all of this outstanding composer’s works are presented. This year, the festival will last from the 15th of June to the 26th of July.

The Roma Music Theater invites you to the world-famous and beloved musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, ‘Phantom of the Opera,’ which has been recognized as the best opera of all time. It has color, dancing, music and singing - everything to enrapture even the fussiest audience.

And now, let us move on to the history of painting. At the National Museum, there is an excellent exhibit called ‘Ukraina úwiatu’ (‘Ukraine to the world’), which shows us how little we know about the culture of this great country. It is the largest presentation of Ukranian works from ancient times shown outside of Ukraine to date, with exhibits dating from before Christ to the 12th century. The exhibit presents the private collections of two industrialists and patrons of art. There are 400 works in all, of exceptional value. In addition, the National Museum is showing the paintings by Franciszek Smuglewicz, an exhibit organized on the 200th anniversary of his death. There are wonderful paintings depicting the Roman Caesar Neron’s Domus Aurea. Fantastic colors and decadence of ancient Rome!

At the Zach ta Gallery from the 18th of May it is possible to see an interesting exhibit of Polish female photographers. It presents the work of 50 women photographing reality from the 1870s to the mid-20th century. It is a very interesting perspective through the lens of the camera as well as a documentary of bygone times. And also - an exhibit of sculptures by Barbara Zbrożyna - ‘sun-exposed figures’. An interesting look at reality through a person’s existance. Zbrożyna is an artist who is open to exploration. It is worth following.

And, at the end, an invitation to an unusual ‘Museum Night’ which will take place this year on Saturday night, the 19th of May, to Sunday, the 20th. It will be possible to see all of Warsaw’s museums for free (and there are several dozen!). Free public transport on buses A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H will begin and end the ‘museum’ route at Plac Bankowy. It is also worth mentioning that ‘Museum Night’ is a German initiative. The first night of this kind, Lange Nacht der Museen Berlin, took place in 1997. Now, 120 European cities, among them many in Poland, open their museums on this one, enchanted night in the year.
