WHERE TO GO - 08.2009
In August, the largest stages in Warsaw are on vacation, but the cultural life in Poland’s capital never burns out – on the contrary, it takes on the dynamism of summertime. Every Sunday (at 12:00 and 16:00), you can go to Łazienki Park to listen to the music of Frederic Chopin beneath a historic monument, in the romantic scenery of the park. You can also go to a Chopin concert at the place of the composer’s birth, in Żelazowa Wola, near Warsaw.
At the National Philharmonic, there is also Chopin music, because the festival „Chopin and his Europe” takes place there every August. On the 28th of August, the program includes, among other things, the Concerto in f-moll, performed by the outstanding American pianist, Emanuel Ax, and on the 31st of August, the same concert will be played by Eldar Nebolsin, a world-famous pianist who was born in Uzbekistan.
In the summer, Warsaw is filled with light, entertaining music. On the 29th of August, at Stadion Gwardii, the outstanding Italian singer, Andrea Bocelli, will perform. This blind tenor joins classical music with pop, and is accompanied by a choir and symphonic orchestra. He will give a recital of his world-famous arias and songs. And the hit of the summer, on the 15th of August, is a concert by Madonna on the tarmac of the airport in Bemowo. Madonna will sing in Poland and in Warsaw for the first time. This concert promotes her newest album, „Hard Candy”. Thousands of tickets were sold out a few months in advance.
The summer „Jazz in the Old Town” festival will last until the end of the month, with a pantheon of stars like David Murray, Archie Sheep, Richard Galliano, Chico Freeman, Dino Saluzzi, Tony Lakatos, Tomasz Stańko, Michał Urbaniak, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Leszek Możdżer and many others. This festival is one of the most popular and the largest ones in terms of audience size in all of Central Europe.
A new musical site in Warsaw is Hoover Square at Krakowskie Przedmieście. On the 21st of August, there will be a concert at this site by a very talented vocalist, composer and rapper (who also happens to be very likeable and charming), Mika Urbaniak.
And now, an essential visit to the National Museum, where there will be an exhibit, starting on the 19th of August, called „Fotografia 1839-2009”, including daguerreotypes and unique prints on paper from the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition, there is an excellent permanent collection at the National Museum, comprised of seven galleries. On the ground floor, in the Gallery of Ancient Art, there are items from the Mediterranean cultures, in the Faras Gallery, there are works of early Christian art, and the Gallery of Medieval Art presents sculptures, gold-smithing, and painted panels from all the regions historically associated with Poland in the Middle Ages, as well as works created in other important centers in Europe. On the first and second floors, in the Galleries of Polish Painters and European Painters, and in the Gallery of Decorative Arts, paintings, sculptures and handcrafted works from the middle ages to the beginning of the 20th century are presented.
It is also worth seeing the Asian Gallery at 5 Freta Street, which belongs to the Museum of Asia and the Pacific. There is a very interesting collection of Vietnamese art there, gathered by Tadeusz Fińdziński (1911-1987), a Polish diplomat, artist and collector.
And there is also the Kordegard Gallery on Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, where an exhibition is being presented. It is called „Baku, Erywań, Tbilisi: Odbiór” and is dedicated to the world of contemporary artists from Caucasia, whose works refer to history and traditions as well as portray contemporary transformations in the culture and everyday lives of citizens.
At the end, an invitation to the Botanical Garden in Powsin, where you can see an exhibition of paintings, and listen to music – and, of course, bird songs – in beautiful natural surroundings.
