WHERE TO GO - 09.2009
In September, from the 18th to the 26th, the 52nd annual International Festival of Contemporary Music „Warszawska Jesień” (Warsaw Autumn), the most prestigious cultural event in Poland, will take place. The details about festival events and the program can be found at www.warszawska-jesien.art.pl.
The National Philharmonic, even before the official start of the artistic season, invites you on to see a guest appearance by the famous Berliner Philharmoniker on the 26th of September. The repertoire of the concert includes L. Van Beethoven’s II Symphony in D-major and D. Szostakowicz’s IV Symphony in C-minor.
Before it begins the new season, the Grand Theater invites you to the first annual Dni Sztuki Tańca (Dance Arts Days). This event inaugurates the concert on the 10th of September, with a performance by musicians from the Chinese Orchestra of Radio and Film. The repertoire will include works by Chinese composers, as well as those by Tchaikovsky, Wieniawski and Chopin. As well, on the 16th of September, the famous group from St. Petersburg will perform the ballet „Oniegin” by Tchaikovsky, with choreography by the wonderful artist, Borys Ejfman. On the 20th of September, the Creations show will take place, which consists of new works by young choreographers from Warsaw. On the 22nd of September, the Kielce Dance Theater will perform a show called „Collage,” and on the 23rd, the group of Akram Khan from London will show „Bahok,” performed by dancers from the Chinese national ballet. And, at the end of the first annual Dance Art Days, the ballet „Tristan” will be performed to the music of Wagner, with choreography by the director of the Grand Theater’s ballet, Krzysztof Pastor, on the 26th of September.
At the Warsaw Chamber Opera (WOK – Warszawska Opera Kameralna), from the 15th of September to the 11th of October, the 28th Festival of Early Polish Music in the Historical Buildings of Warsaw (Muzyka Staropolska w Zabytkach Warszawy) will take place. In addition, on the 20th and 21st of September, shows of G. Paisello „Il Barbiere di Seviglia” and on the 28th September, the 2nd Handel Festival will begin. It will last until the 19th of December.
At the Roma Music Theater, the wonderful, the fantastic, and the world-famous musical „The Phantom of the Opera” will reign. It has been a great hit in the repertoire of Warsaw’s theaters for a long time now.
At the National Theater, from the 9th of September to the 26th of October, there is an interesting exhibit called „Dialog czarno na białym” (A dialogue in black on white), of Poland and Hungarian prints from 1918-1939. Collections from Warsaw and Budapest museums will be shown.
At the Royal Castle, there is an exhibit called „The Polish Connection”, which is an artistic installation by Antoni Malinowski, which was recently shown at the wonderful, restored Kibicki Arcades at the castle, which are located near the bank of the Vistula River.
At the Center for Contemporary Art (at Ujazdowski Castle) there is an exhibit called „Sztuka polska lat 90. XX wieku” (Polish art in the 1990s) starting on the 14th of September.
At the end of September, the festival „Spotkanie Teatrów Narodowych” (National Theatres” Meeting) planned by the National Theater in Warsaw will begin. It will be a presentation of European arts, performed by European theaters from different countries. The program includes the French Comedy, Aleksandryjski Theater from St. Petersburg, Piccolo Teatro di Milano, and the Romanian Teatrul National.
At the Congress Hall, on the 6th of September, the outstanding American performer Macy Gray, who has one of the most distinct and charismatic voices in the world, will appear. And at Warsaw’s Palladium, on the 19th of September, the French group Nouvelle Vaque will perform – they are famous for their interesting musical interpretations and sense of humor.
And finally, as always, an invitation to the Botanical Garden in Powsin. The September charm of the garden lets you forget about all your worries and troubles. It is the best therapy.
