WHERE TO GO - 10.2008
The Warsaw Philharmonic is having a celebration on the occasion of the internationally renowned Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s 75th birthday, with two concerts on the 3rd and 4th of October. The program includes „Credo” by this composer and the First Piano Concerto by Brahms. On the 10th and 11th of October, Ernesto Martinez Izquierdo will conduct the Fourth Symphony by Tchaikovsky and „Concierto heroico” by Joaquin Rodrigo (1901-1999), an artist who refers to Iberian culture in his music. On the 12th of October, there will be an orchestra concert by Sinfonia Iuventus, which brings together all of the most talented graduates of Polish music schools. The program includes Max Bruch’s First Concerto on violin, among others. On the 13th, there will be a guest appearance by the Bergen Philharmonic with works by Brahms, Sorensen and Stravinsky. This event is under the patronage of the Norwegian Embassy in Warsaw. On the 19th, there is a concert of opera music with international performers, with the Puccini opera „Il Tabaro” in a concert arrangement. On the 30th, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse will give a concert of works by composers such as Messiaen, Grieg and Berlioz.
The Grand Theater, which is our main opera stage, invites you for the premiere of „Faust” by Charles Gounod, directed by Robert Wilson, who is legendary for his staging of this opera, which is one that has always been very popular throughout the history of the Grand Theater in Warsaw. Subsequent dates for „Faust” are on the 28th, 29th and 30th of October.
The Warsaw Chamber OPERA (WOK – Warszawska Opera Kameralna), which does not need any advertising due to its great popularity with music lovers in and out of Warsaw, presents the opera „Giulio Cesare” by Georg Friedrich Handel on the 18th. Subsequent shows will take place on the 21st, 23rd, 25th and 27th of October.
The super hit „Phantom of the Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Weber, which has been enormously popular among with Varsovians and visitors to our city for many months, will be presented in October by the Roma Music Theater. Its success is nothing surprising, because this musical is regarded as the greatest of all time. Wonderful music, entertaining scenes, colors, and perfect dancing and singing all enthrall audiences.
The National Museum invites you to a very interesting exhibition, starting on the 17th of October, called „Orientalism in painting, drawing, and graphic art in the 19th and 20th centuries”. It is the first presentation of its size in our country showing the influence of orientalism on Polish painting. In fact, these influences are visible in paintings of the time throughout Europe. The exhibit at the National Museum presents 200 paintings from more than a dozen Polish museums, and many of them have common themes connected with travel and geographic discoveries.
Galeria Zachęta is presenting paintings by the very interesting Polish artist Włodzimierz Pawlak, a painter, performer, poet, art theorist, pedagogue and famous member of the artistic group „Gruppa”. It is this artist’s first retrospective show, and it shows his works from 1984 to the present. The artist himself is filled with creative invention and wonderful imagination. His paintings are very eye catching. It is worth adding that Galeria Zachęta is also organizing the Polish exhibition in Venice in October. They are showing a very intriguing and provocative project, „The afterlife of buildings”, which explores the future lives of buildings. It is not only about art, but also about how we live. The Polish exhibition in Venice received the Golden Lion award for the best pavilion in the show.
And then, there is the Museum of Asia and the Pacific, which is a pleasure to visit. Until the 25th of October, at the Asiatic Gallery at 5 Freta Street, it is still possible to see an interesting exhibit called „People, Spirits, Wood” with the art of the Asmats, a tribe which lives on a very small part of the coast of New Guinea. Until recently, they had fought off any outside influences on their culture and had not shunned cannibalism. Very interesting art!
Last but not least, it would be hard not to invite you to the Botanical Garden in Powsin in October. The fall colors create paradise on earth in the garden.
