WHERE TO GO - 10.2009

This October, there will be a lot of music in Warsaw. Let us begin with the largest musical stage in our city (and in Europe!), the Grand Theater. On the 8th and the 10th: the opera „Wozzeck” by A. Berg, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski, who has become well-known beyond Poland’s borders. In the following days, there are two ballet performances: „Tristan” (on the 11th) by R. Wagner, and „Bajadera” (on the 16th and the 18th) by L. Minkus. On the 23rd – „La Rossignol”, a renaissance music and dance group from Italy. As well, on the 30th of October, the Grand Theater invites you to the premiere of „Borys Godunow”, an opera by M. Musorgski, directed by Mariusz Treliński, who has also become, like Warlikowski, a famous opera director in Europe. Another showing of „Borys Godunow” will take place on the 31st of October.
The Warsaw Chamber Opera (or „WOK” – Warszawska Opera Kameralna) presents „Early Polish Music in the Historical Buildings of Warsaw” (until the 11th of October), as well as the Second George Frideric Handel Festival. Details about the repertoire of this festival, which is especially popular among visitors to Warsaw, are available at www.operakameralna.pl (English version).
The National Philharmonic (Filharmonia Narodowa) starts its artistic season on the 2nd of October, with a concert directed by Antoni Wit, and the music of T. Baird and S. Prokofiev, among others. On the 6th, there will be a concert on the 350th year anniversary of the birth of H. Purcell, performed by the New London Consort. It will be „Dido and Aeneas” as performed by British soloists. On the 8th – philharmonic musicians from Belarus will present the music of their composers. Then, on the 10th, musicians from Lithuania will do the same. On the 13th, there will be a solo cello recital, an evening of sonatas, with Tomasz Strahl. On the 16th, there will be a performance by the chamber orchestra „Amadeus”, led by Agnieszka Duczmal, with a repertoire that includes Mozart and Grieg. On the 27th – the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with director Charles Dutoit will perform music by Ravel, Elgar and Prokofiev. On the 30th, „Requiem” by A. Dvorak will be performed by soloists and the orchestra and choir of the National Philharmonic, directed by T. Wojciechowski.
The Roma Music Theater is still presenting „Phantom of the Opera,” which enjoys unwavering success, and is getting ready for the premiere of another world hit musical, „Les Miserables”.
In its beautifully restored Kubicki Arcades, the Royal Castle is showing an interesting exhibit, „The Polish Connection”, which links the past and the present with a conceptual bridge between the first public British gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery, and the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
Galeria Zachęta invites you to an interesting exhibition with a humorous and provocative title, „Siusiu w torcik” („To Pee in a Bun”, but this title has its justification), which shows works that until now have been presented only rarely, or never before
The National Museum is presenting an exhibit called „Pro Fide et Patrie – For faith and homeland”, with prints and drawings from collections like that of the City Museum of Sucha Beskidzka, which has a wonderful assortment that was started in 1869 with an endowment from Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, a historical writer who is also famous for having written a huge number of books.
And, finally, there are some interesting concerts of pop, soul, jazz, hip-hop and other kinds of music. On the 6th of October, the world-famous Polish singer, Basia, will perform at Congress Hall (Sala Kongresowa). This will be her big come-back. The performer is promoting her latest album, „It’s that girl again”, which premiered in Japan. Also at Congress Hall, on the 10th, there will be a performance by Tori Amos, who is promoting her newest album, which is provocatively titled „Abnormally attracted to sin”. On the 13th, Nigel Kennedy, a musician who is very well liked in Poland and who was a favorite of Y. Menuhin’s, will perform at Stodoła. On the 16th, also at Stodoła, a British group which plays various kinds of the „Archiwe” music will make an appearance. On the 27th of October at Congress Hall, there will be a performance by the Alexandrov Choir from Russia, which has more than two thousand songs in its repertoire.
