WHERE TO GO - 11.2008
Let us begin with an invitation to the National Philharmonic, which, on the 15th of November will celebrate the 70th birthday of the outstanding Polish composer Zygmunt Krauze. The program includes ‘Serenade’ by this composer and works by F. Poulenc, among them ‘Stabat Mater’ for soprano, choir and orchestra. On the 25th of November, there is an interesting concert of ancient Italian music, a cappella. On the 27th - Camerata Nova, in the program there are works by F. Mendelssohn and F. Schubert. On the 28th and 29th of November, there is a concert by musicians of the National Philharmonic under the direction of a guest conductor, Leopold Hager, an outstanding conductor from Austria who is known for his interpretations of music by Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. In Warsaw, Hager will direct works by J. Brahms, C. Saint-Saens and M. Ravel.
The Grand Theater, the leading opera stage in Poland, invites you in November to see, among other things, a guest concert (on the 6th of November) by the wonderful Singing and Dancing Group ‘Mazowsze’, which has popularized Polish folklore all around the world. There will be wonderful music, dancing, colors, ladies and men - there is certainly something to see and hear! On the 13th of November, there will be a guest concert by the Filharmonica Della Scala, conducted by Daniel Gatti. On the 19th of November, the premiere of the ballet ‘Anna Karenina’ by R. Szczedrin will take place; it is an international production, performed by dancers from the Grand Theater. The performance will be repeated the next day, on the 20th of November. On the 23rd of November, there will be a concert where the world-famous work by Krzysztof Penderecki, ‘Seven gates of Jerusalem’ will be performed. The composer himself, who is celebrating his 75th birthday this year, will conduct the concert. At the end of the month of November, on the 28th and 30th, the Grand Theater will present the very popular opera ‘La Traviata’ by Giuseppe Verdi.
The wonderful Warsaw Chamber Opera, after its artistic voyages in foreign countries, invites audiences in November to ‘Giulio Cesare’ by G. F. Handel (on the 3rd and 4th), and from the 13th to the 26th, and the 30th of November to ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ by W. A. Mozart. Operas by Mozart are a well-known ‘specialty’ of this stage. As well, on the 28th and 29th of November, WOK invites you to ‘The Barber of Seville’ by G. Rossini.
And now for another musical stage, namely the Roma Music Theater. For some time now, the musical ‘Phantom of the Opera’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber has been a big hit. It has been written of this musical that it is ‘the greatest pleasure that a music theater anywhere in the world could give its audience.’ And those who have seen this musical do not need to be convinced of the truth in those words.
Another theater which specializes in musicals, Teatr Syrena, invites you in November to ‘Three Penny Opera’ by Kurt Weill. This is one of the most popular dramas by Bertold Brecht. Its pre-premiere took place exactly 80 years ago, in 1928, and since then it has never lost its popularity and relevance - it is a story of criminals and corrupt policemen. And unfortunately, there are plenty of them in every time and place.
There is also an invitation to the Royal Castle, where an especially interesting exhibit will be shown, starting on the 11th of November (a national holiday in Poland) called ‘Dwudziestolecie. Oblicza nowoczesności’ (Twenty years. The face of modernity). This ‘dwudziestolecie’ (twenty years) was the time between 1918, when Poland regained its sovereignty after 123 years of subjugation, and 1939, when the Second World War broke out. Those twenty years were a very special time in the history of our country. And this is what the exhibit is about, among other things.
Last but not least, an invitation to Galeria Zachęta, where there is an exhibition called ‘Rewolucje 1968’, on until the 9th of November, which attempts to show this turbulent time in Europe, and also an exhibit by the Israeli artist Guy Ben-Ner ‘Zgodnie z instrukcją’ (‘Instructions Included’), on until the 16th of November.
